How to Convert CSV to JSON Online for Free

CSV (comma-separated values) stores tabular data as rows and columns. JSON stores structured data as objects and arrays, which many APIs and JavaScript applications can consume. Converting CSV to JSON usually means turning each data row into an object whose property names come from the header row.

Example: CSV rows become JSON objects

Suppose a spreadsheet is exported with a header row and two records:

name,department,active
Asha,Support,true
Ravi,Sales,false

A typical JSON representation is an array containing one object per row:

[
  { "name": "Asha", "department": "Support", "active": "true" },
  { "name": "Ravi", "department": "Sales", "active": "false" }
]

Many converters preserve CSV cell values as strings. If your application requires numbers, booleans, or dates as native JSON values, validate and convert those fields explicitly after conversion.

How to convert CSV to JSON

  1. Export your spreadsheet as a CSV file or copy its CSV text.
  2. Open the free CSV to JSON converter and paste the text.
  3. Check that the first row contains unique, meaningful column names.
  4. Convert the data, review the resulting objects, then copy or download the JSON.
  5. Test the JSON with the application or API that will consume it.

Common CSV conversion problems

  • Commas inside a value: fields such as "Mumbai, India" need correct CSV quoting.
  • Quotes inside a field: CSV commonly escapes an embedded double quote by doubling it.
  • Missing or duplicate headers: use a distinct column name for each field so object properties remain clear.
  • Uneven row lengths: check rows with too few or too many fields before importing the data.
  • Unexpected data types: CSV itself does not reliably declare whether a cell is a number, date, or boolean.

When should you use JSON instead of CSV?

CSV is convenient for spreadsheets and flat tables. JSON supports nested objects, arrays, and more complex records, so it is common in web APIs and application configuration. Choose the format expected by the receiving system rather than converting unnecessarily.

Keep sensitive data safe

Before using any online converter, check how it processes input. Avoid uploading confidential customer records, credentials, or personal data unless you are authorized and the tool's privacy practices meet your requirements. Use sample or redacted data when troubleshooting.
